78-year old Alice Bee Ah Leong will be amongst the numerous crowd motivators performing a mass dance during the grand entrance procession of the 8th ASEAN Para Games opening ceremony, where athletes from nine other neighbouring nations will be welcomed to Singapore.
These competitors will be looking to achieve glory for themselves and their country on the Southeast Asian stage, but Alice hopes her performance will bring Singapore’s guests a little bit of glee before the competition proper begins.
“I feel very honoured being able to support the APG and be on the stage with the athletes, as they encourage me too. I feel rejuvenated when I perform and I enjoy it a lot,” said Alice, who also cited the camaraderie she shares with her fellow dancers as one of the reasons why she has been enjoying her time working on the opening ceremony.
“For me, I feel happy and I want to make the athletes happy [through my performance]. I feel life is about being happy and bringing joy to others.”
As an active volunteer, Alice has a myriad of experiences under her belt, including many visits with her friends to various homes for the elderly, to perform songs for and interact with the residents. Additionally, she has also volunteered her time for large-scale events like the Chingay Parade and the National Day Parade.
Her passion for volunteering was evident when she opted to turn up for opening ceremony rehearsals just a few days after undergoing cataract surgery on her eye.
“I am part of this performance and I was worried that I would affect the performance in a negative way if I missed the training. Everyone is performing with a sincere heart and I felt that I should come,” she explained.
Much like the para athletes set to compete at the Games, Alice boasts a can-do spirit that drives her commitment to the APG and volunteering. She hopes that by doing her part, others will follow her lead in living life to the fullest.
“You can accomplish anything as long as you have a passion for it and you work hard towards your goal. Everything can be achieved and you can overcome the obstacles and challenges,” she pointed out.
